New Grant Awarded to Protect Huron River Watershed
The Huron River Watershed Council is receiving almost two million dollars in federal funds to protect water quality.
The Huron River Watershed Council has received one-point-eight million dollars in federal funds to help protect the land near the river.
The money will be used to ensure land preservation around the watershed and encourage agricultural practices that preserve water quality.
Laura Rubin is the Executive Director of the council. She says one way to encourage those practices is through financial incentives.
“So rather than trying to harvest all of the land up to the creek it’s actually paying the farmers to keep some in vegetation and that will help improve water quality,” Rubin says.
Rubin says the council is developing strategies to allocate the funds over the next five years.
The grant is part of a regional partnership with local conservationists and governments developed under the 2014 US Farm Bill.
