“We’re entitled to hate people who hate America, but we’re not entitled to use the law against them,” says Dershowitz.

In a little more than a week we’ll have a new president and a new administration. President-elect Donald Trump and some of his picks for top positions in the executive branch have sparked many questions and concerns about civil liberties in this country.

Could America become a country that imposes a religious test to enter the country? How will the administration treat people with disabilities?

Alan Dershowitz is one of the foremost civil liberties defenders in the country. He joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about these questions, as well as what the next four years mean for American Jews and our relationship with Israel.

“We’re entitled to hate people who hate America, but we’re not entitled to use the law against them,” says Dershowitz.

Detroit Today also explored the topic of how Trump’s policy proposals might affect American Jews and U.S.-Israeli relations during two shows in November.

Dershowitz will speak at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills next Thursday, January 19th, at 7:15 p.m. The event is titled “Looking Ahead: What Do the Next Four Years Mean for American Jews and our Relationship with Israel?” The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.
