Strong Winds Leave Thousands Powerless [OUTAGE MAP]
DTE Energy says 670,000 customers have no electricity.
Worst.
Windstorm.
Ever.
Here’s the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac Windstorm Summary Page
That’s how DTE Energy describes the winds that brought down more than 4,000 power lines throughout southeast Michigan Thursday. At one point, the company says nearly 800,000 customers lost service. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, that number was 665,000, making it the worst weather-related event in DTE’s history.
Spokeswoman Stephanie Beres says workers from five other states are joining DTE employees today to try to restore service as quickly as possible.

DTE has these tips for customers:
· Never drive across a downed power line. If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside until help arrives. Also DO NOT TOUCH ANY DOWNED LINE OR ANYTHING IT’S TOUCHING–ASSUME THE LINE IS ENERGIZED.
· Always operate generators outdoors to avoid dangerous buildup of toxic fumes.
· Turn off or unplug all appliances to prevent an electrical overload when power is restored. Leave one light switch on to indicate when power is restored.
· Don’t open refrigerators or freezers more than absolutely necessary. A closed refrigerator will stay cold for 12 hours. Kept closed, a well-filled freezer will preserve food for two days.
· If a customer is elderly or has a medical condition that would be adversely impacted by a power outage, they should try to make alternative accommodations with family or friends.
