Freedom House’s TJ Rogers on Welcoming Asylum Seekers, Surviving Threat to Funding

“If we were forced to close or not offer these services, people would have no where else to go.”

Freedom House Detroit houses and provides services to asylum seekers who arrive here in Southeast Michigan.

It’s an organization that was threatened by a possible funding cut earlier this year, which would have meant it had to dramatically scale back the services it provides to asylum seekers.

But a public campaign to raise awareness about the threat to the organization helped stave off those cuts.

TJ Rogers, program manager at Freedom House, joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson.

They talk about how the organization has rebounded from the threat of reduced funding, as well as the important role nonprofit organizations play in the community.

“We are the only organization in the country that provides shelter, legal aid, and a full scope of comprehensive services to asylum seekers at no charge,” says Rogers. “If we were forced to close or not offer these services, people would have no where else to go.”
