Expert: Facial Recognition Systems can be Fooled Fairly Easily

Flyers beware! A Michigan expert says security devices that recognize facial features can be thrown off by simply wearing eyeglasses or changing hairstyles.

Members of the U.S. Senate want Homeland Security officials to answer questions about the accuracy of facial recognition technology used at some of the nation’s airports.

That includes Detroit Metro, which has used the system at security checkpoints.

The lawmakers allege that facial recognition devices inaccurately deny some travelers from boarding flights.

An expert in the technology, Michigan State University professor Anil Jain, tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter the system is effective.

But he says it can be fooled.
