Michigan students will get their first chance at national competition.

Young inventors from across the country will come to Metro Detroit to pitch their big ideas.

The National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurial Expo – known as Nice-ee – will come to The Henry Ford in June. Lucie Howell is the museum’s director of learning and engagement. She said the event is a cross between a science fair and the popular tv show “Shark Tank.”

“Students work on projects that are solving problems either in their lives or in their communities,” Howell said. “They invent something to solve that problem and then they get an opportunity to make a pitch just like you would in Shark Tank.”

Howell said Michigan does not currently have an invention convention. Students qualify for the national competition by presenting at one in their state. So, the museum is launching one. The Henry will host the pilot Michigan Invention Convention in March before the national event in June.
