A Weighty Report: Kids are Growing More Obese

New federal data shows children, especially those between 2 and 5 years old, are becoming increasingly obese. Previous data showed trend in other direction. Obesity could lead to dire health problems, overtax hospital systems.

A new study published this week in the journal “Pediatrics” reveals a trend growing in the wrong direction.

An analysis of federal data finds that the rate of obesity among children in the U.S., especially those between 2 and 5 years old, is increasing.

In some cases the rise is dramatic.

The lead author of the study is Duke University Associate Professor Asheley Skinner.

 

She tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter that the results hold dire implications for both kids and the nation’s health care system.
