What Does Chemical Bank’s Move To Detroit Say About The City’s Development?

The state’s largest bank will move its HQ to downtown with no tax incentives.

Chemical Bank, Michigan’s largest bank, announced last week that it will move its headquarters to downtown Detroit. The company will build a 20-story building at Woodward and Elizabeth, just across from Comerica Park.

This has been a rolling story in Detroit for several years now; corporate headquarters relocating from the suburbs or other parts of the state to our largest city’s central business district.

But Chemical Bank is an especially big get for the city, and it will also build its tower without the help of tax abatements or incentives, which may say something important about the health of the Detroit development scene.

Kirk Pinho, a reporter with Crain’s Detroit Business, joins Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson to talk about Chemical’s move to Detroit.
