Michigan Legislature

Since the November election, Republicans who control the Michigan Legislature have been working on a number of hotly debated and controversial bills.

Critics say legislation to strip power from the incoming Democratic governor, attorney general, and secretary of state are brazen Republican power grabs. They’re also angry about lawmakers’ moves to undo a new law that raises the minimum wage and gut another new law guaranteeing paid sick leave to workers.

Not all Republicans agree on these issues, and about the pace at which the Legislature is moving on other controversial bills in the lame duck session.

On Detroit Today, Stephen Henderson speaks with two Republicans who see these issues differently — state Rep. Martin Howrylak (R-Troy) and state Sen. Phil Pavlov (R-St. Clair).
