When you talk about ideas like Medicare for All or other broad-based safety net programs, the nearly immediate push-back is often to call those ideas “socialist.”

It’s used as a way to shut down any argument about liberal policy.

But how far are our characterizations of socialism from the actual meaning of the word? Has the word “socialism” essentially lost its meaning in modern American politics?
