A Wayne County Prosecutor is resigning after posting a controversial message on Facebook condemning protesters in Baltimore.

After rioting erupted in Baltimore earlier this week in response to the death of Freddie Gray, who died while being held in police custody, Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Teana Walsh took to Facebook to comment on the situation.

The solution, she wrote, was to “Shoot ‘em. Period. End of discussion.”

The post was widely circulated through social media. And widely criticized as being irresponsible.

Now the Prosecutor’s office says Walsh is voluntarily resigning.

In a written statement County officials said they are accepting the resignation, but add that the post was almost immediately taken down…

They describe it as something out of character for Walsh, who they say is known for her compassion for victims of crime.
