Former Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz Has Died

Wojtowicz served the county for nearly four decades.

Former Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz has died, according to county officials. Wojotwicz served in office for nearly four decades before announcing his retirement in 2015.

During an interview with WDET and Bridge Magazine in 2017, Wojtowicz reflected on his legacy.

“One thing that I feel good about is every so often I do meet with those individuals that we had a chance to assist and help and they’d express appreciation,” said Wojtowicz. “And all I can say to them is, ‘Thank you for doing your part now in getting back into the system.’”

Wojtowicz oversaw more than 100,000 tax foreclosures in Wayne County. He was succeeded by current treasurer Eric Sabree who was elected to office in 2016.

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of former Wayne County Treasurer Raymond J. Wojtowicz,” said Sabree in a statement today. “In 2011, Treasurer Wojtowicz gave me the opportunity to work under his leadership in the Treasurer’s Office. My condolences and prayers go out to the entire Wojtowicz family during this difficult time.”
