Detroit Ranks Last In Top 25 Cities People Want to Move
A report from Apartment List ranks the Motor City dead last among top metro areas for relocation.
In recent years the city of Detroit has been billed as the American comeback kid.
The persistent narrative of the city’s resurgence would lead many to believe that the metro area is turning into a desirable location for outsiders. Not so, according to a recent report by CityLab. The study asserts, among the top 25 metros, Detroit is last in attracting interest from people looking to move.
“People from other cities aren’t necessarily looking at Detroit as the first place they want to go after they’re leaving San Francisco, Denver, Baltimore.” – Sarah Holder, CityLab.

Sarah Holder, a staff writer at CityLab and author of “The Cities Americans Want to Flee, and Where They Want to Go”, based her writing on findings from analysis of an Apartment List report. The study confirms a general trend borne out in the census data, showing Americans are moving a lot less than in past years.
This stagnancy is in large part due to the lack of quality work worth uprooting oneself for and the financial barriers imposed by moving costs. Those who are looking to re-locate are doing so in their general region, not a leap across the country, says Holder.
“People from other cities aren’t necessarily looking at Detroit as the first place they want to go after they’re leaving San Francisco, Denver, Baltimore,” she says.
