Creating a Culture Where Automobiles and Bicycles Can Get Along
Today is “Ride your Bike to Work Day,” but how safe are Michigan’s roadways for bicyclists?
Today is “Ride your Bike to Work Day,” and it seems that motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians all have different ideas about the rules of the road.
Many of us just don’t know what the laws are when it comes to bicyclists on our roadways. John Lindenmayer, the Executive Director of the League of Michigan Bicyclists, a Lansing-based organization whose mission is to promote bicycling and the safety of bicyclists on the roadways of Michigan and Zac Pashak, Founder and Owner of Detroit Bikes, join Stephen Henderson on Detroit Today to discuss what Michigan’s laws are when it comes to bicyclists, and how a better understanding of those laws and the rights of bicyclists will make Michigan’s roadways a safer place for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Some of the topics that were addressed:
- Rules of the road for motorists are essential the same for bicyclists
- How bike-friendly is Detroit
- Complete Streets is a law that mandates that when new roads are being planned, they must take into account the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians, not just automobile traffic
- Joining a group ride is a good way to become familiar with what it’s like to ride in the city of Detroit
- Having your bicycle tires properly inflated is rule number one.
