Southwest Detroit: See If You Can Enter A Free Lead Remediation Program

The City of Detroit is offering a free program to remove lead paint from houses in a Southwest neighborhood.

The initiative is available to residents living in four census tracts of the 48209 zip code with houses built before 1978. Officials say residents can call the city to see if they qualify.

• Patton Park on Woodmere St. — October 3rd and October 19th,
• La Fiesta on Vernor Highway — September 29th and October 13th

Nicole Wyse is associate director of the Community Development Division within Detroit’s Housing and Revitalization Department.  She says with about 93% of Detroit houses built before lead paint was banned in construction practices, the remediation program could be applied in several ways.

“It could be removing windows and replacing windows,” says Wyse. “It could be repairing or replacing paint, walls, doors – things of that nature that might have lead-based paint on it.”

Wyse says the program is targeted at residence where a child under the age of six lives. However, she says there are exceptions. A house where a pregnant woman lives also qualifies.

“You also can be living in a house that has a child visiting,” Wyse explains. “So for instance, a grandparent who might watch a child on a regular basis.”
