A Detroit Public School teacher is receiving the first-ever Michigan Lottery Educator of the Year Award. Horticulture teacher Michael Craig works with special needs students at the Charles Drew Transition Center in Detroit.

Lottery Spokesperson Jeff Holyfield says what separates Craig from others is his dedication to students, even after they’ve left his classroom.

“Part of what he does. after students go through his program, is then he works to see if he can find them jobs, and for special needs students, that’s a huge factor,” Holyfield says.

The award is part of the Michigan Lottery’s Excellence in Education program which recognizes teachers around the state each week for the impact they’ve made in the lives of students.

Craig was chosen from a pool of 34 educators of the week winners, and was awarded a grand prize of $10,000.
