Eastern Michigan University Approves 7.8% Tuition Hike
EMU will increase tuition by 7.8% next fall.
The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents have unanimously approved a 7.8 percent tuition hike.
The increase exceeds a state-imposed tuition cap, forfeiting the university’s ability to receive approximately one million dollars in funds.
Spokesperson Geoff Larcom says freshmen next year will pay roughly $10,400 in tuition. He says that’s still lower than most Michigan schools.
“That we expect will keep us the third lowest in terms of affordability in Michigan; that is we are 13th out the 15 publics,” Larcom says. “So while we did raise tuition it’s important to understand that we also maintain our place as one of Michigan’s most accessible and affordable universities.”
Larcom says the tuition hike will provide the university with $10 million more than what they would have received under the state cap.
He says it was necessary for the school to increase tuition to maintain the quality of education for students.
