AAA Expects 1.4 Million Michiganders to Travel Over the Fourth of July

Travel over this year’s Independence Day is expected to be the busiest since 2007.

About 1.4 million Michiganders are expected to travel this weekend. AAA Michigan projects the upcoming holiday will be the busiest Independence Day since 2007. Spokesperson Susan Hiltz says the increase is the result of low gas prices this past year.

“And that’s putting more money in people’s pocket books, so that makes a real big difference. People have more expendable income. Also the way that the holiday’s hitting—you know, it’s on Saturday, a lot of people have Friday off, so they’re making a long weekend or some are taking the whole week off.”

Hiltz says, compared to last year, 100,000 more residents will leave home over Independence Day. She says almost 90-percent of travelers this weekend will reach their destinations by automobile.
