Mackinac Island Mayor Serves Unique Constituency

Maureen Doud has been the Mayor of Mackinac Island for 40 years.

Thousands of Michiganders will head up north for the weekend to spend part of their holiday on Mackinac Island.  They’ll ride in horse-drawn carriages, sit on the porch at the Grand Hotel and eat fudge.

Maureen Doud works to make sure the tourists have a good time while there.

She’s the owner of the Windemere Hotel downtown.  She’s also the Mayor of Mackinac Island and has been for the past 40 years.

Dowd sat down with WDET’s Jerome Vaughn to talk about her unusual start in politics.
