Retired Teachers May Be Able to Return as Substitutes
A new bill may allow retired teachers to return to work in the same district they retired from.
Retired teachers would able to return to work in schools with a shortage in substitute teachers under new legislation. State representative Holly Hughes is sponsoring the bill. She says right now retired teachers are only allowed to return to work without penalty if they change school districts.
She says the new bill will allow them to sub in their own district.
“Right now if they were to try to do that they still could substitute teach, but they would lose their retirement,” Hughes says. “And this way, they can earn up to a third and they are also required to pay into the retirement.”
Hughes says retired teachers would only be able to return as substitutes if the school has a critical staff shortage.
