Enbridge Beefs Up Safety Measures at Straits of Mackinac Pipeline in Wake of Scrutiny
Company says it will follow recommendations made by independent analysis
The company that owns a 63 year old oil and gas pipeline running under the Straits of Mackinac says it’s beefing up its safety measures. Enbridge announced today that the company is spending seven million dollars on new technology and equipment intended to protect the Straits of Mackinac, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, should an oil spill occur. The pipeline has come under intense scrutiny in recent months by State officials and the conservation community. A state task force and an independent analysis of alternatives to Line 5 are underway with recommendations expected sometime later this year. Enbridge Spokesperson Ryan Duffy tells WDET’s Amy Miller that the company decided to follow the 2-year old recommendations of an independent analysis which suggested the company invest in the new equipment as a fail-safe measure.
