This time on Culture City, we’ll hear tunes from artists playing the concert of colors, including NYC by way of Tokyo trip-hop duo Cibo Matto and Nigerian legend King Sunny Ade, plus we catch-up and get real with iconic Canadian TV show host and musician Fred Penner. His show, “Fred Penner’s Place,” aired on CBC in Canada from 1985 to 1997, and was seen stateside on Nickelodeon from 1989 to 1992. For kids on both sides of the border, he was a mainstay alongside personalities such as Rafi and Mr. Dressup. Penner played a pivotal role in bringing a daily dose of acoustic music and vocabulary lessons (via a regular visit from his friend Word Bird) into hundreds of thousands of households across North America, including Travis’. In full disclosure, it was a big deal for Trav when he had the opportunity to speak with Penner in anticipation of his Concert of Colors performance on July 16th. Trav says Penner was as genuine, considerate, and entertaining as I’d ever hoped.
We’re giving away a couple weekend passes to upcoming The Mo Pop Music Festival (July 23 & 24), so we’ll spin a few tracks from some artists on the bill including Haim, Glass Animals and Father John Misty.
After that, we’re going to dip into The Truth Booth, a video documentary project and sculpture that’s making its way to Detroit and Flint. We also have songs from cinema’s John Carpenter… yes, THAT John Carpenter … who plays the Masonic on July 15th. And, finally, one of Detroit’s best bands, Fawnn, celebrated the release of their latest album, Ultimate Oceans,on July 8th so we’ll listen to the breakout single from that record.
