A Voter’s Guide to the 8th Congressional Race
Candidates: Republican Mike Bishop and Democrat Suzanna Shkreli
Libertarian Jeff Wood, Natural Law Candidate Jeremy Burgess and the Green Party’s Maria Green also will be on the ballot.
Michigan’s 8th Congressional District includes parts of Oakland County and all of Ingham and Livingston. Actress Melissa Gilbert, of “Little House on Prairie” fame, was a Democratic candidate, but she withdrew from the race in May, citing health reasons.
Republican Incumbent Mike Bishop
Freshman Congressman Mike Bishop was a private practice attorney for five years, then served in the Michigan House and Senate. He was Senate Majority Leader from 2007 to 2010. He received his J.D. from Michigan State and his B.A. from the University of Michigan.

Democratic Challenger Suzanna Shkreli
Shkreli graduated from Oakland University and became a Macomb County prosecutor. She is in the Child Protection Unit and represented the U.S. Department of Justice in training law enforcement about victim rights.

Green Party Candidate Maria Green
Green is an activist and herbal practitioner, who says her priorities involve ending the war on drugs and legalizing cannabis. Green is also involved in child protective services reform regarding families with cannabis exposure.

Natural Law Candidate Jeremy Burgess
Burgess is a research and development engineer with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a M.S. in Chemistry from Oakland University. He says his priorities are economic growth, national debt reduction and education.
