Booker T Jones: The Stax Records Icon Talks Marvin Gaye and Mayer Hawthorne
In anticipation of this weekened’s concert, we talk past and present Motor City Soul with Booker T. Jones
Since the early ’60s, when Booker T. Jones started cranking out music for the iconic label Stax Records, the prolific multi-instrumentalist has continuously produced world-class soul tunes while touring the globe. Indeed, Booker T & The MGs had a breakout hit with the famous instrumental “Green Onions,” but the band’s musical output extends so far beyond that track.
In anticipation of this weekend’s special engagement ‘An Evening With Booker T. Jones’ this Sunday, November 6th at El Club in Southwest Detroit, WDET’s Travis Wright spoke with the Jones about his earliest Motown memory, as well as his contemporary collaboration with Detroit’s Mayer Hawthorne.
