An elections board will meet Monday afternoon at the state Capitol to certify the results of the November elections. That will also allow a recount of the results in the presidential race in Michigan to get underway.

The recount is being called for by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s campaign. A recount can only be demanded by a losing candidate on the Michigan ballot.

David Cobb is Stein’s national campaign manager. He says the purpose of the recount is not to reverse Republican Donald Trump’s Michigan victory.

Cooper says it is to test the integrity of Michigan’s system for counting votes.

“We are not interested in trying to overturn any results, only to verify the results,” said Cobb.

“The only way to truly verify the votes is if you do a robust audit or a recount of those paper ballots, and that’s what we’re talking about doing.”

Elections officials are already preparing for a hand recount of paper ballots in Michigan’s 83 counties. The Stein campaign will pick up the $790,000 cost.

The Stein campaign is also calling for recounts in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
