The Progressive Underground Show 196: Cafe Mahogany Tribute Edition
This installment of The Progressive Underground celebrates the legacy of CAFE MAHOGANY
This weekend’s The Progressive Underground is a CAFE MAHOGANY Tribute Edition. Cafe Mahogany was the mid-1990s-era poetry/music/dance venue that launched the careers of many of Detroit’s top poets, wordsmiths and music artists and is often referred to as Detroit’s “Harlem Renaissance.”
Appearing on the show will be Mahogany host Joel “Fluent” Greene, DJ Carl “Invisible” Hollier, noted poets Jessica Care Moore, Khary Kimani Turner, Stephen “Sparrow” O’Neal, Frenchie Davis, Nandi Comer, Malik Alston, Reshounn Foster, Ber-Henda Williams, LaShaun “Phoenix” Kotaran, Mahogany owners Carl & Cyrus Shaw, booking agent Zana Smith and various others.
It will be a night of poetry, music and vibe-making as the WDET studios are transformed into a poetry/music cypher “Cafe Mahogany style.” The action happens tonight from 8-11 pm EST on 101.9 WDET and wdet.org.
