Detroit Clerk Winfrey on Recount Request: ‘You will never find 1,400 votes’
“If that’s how they want to spend their money, they have plenty of it,” Winfrey says of her challenger’s campaign.
Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey will serve another term in the role after her election victory last night.
Winfrey beat opponent Garlin Gilchrist by about 1,400 votes. The margin of victory was narrow enough Gilchrist says he will call for a recount.
Winfrey tells Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson she isn’t worried the outcome will change if there is a recount.
“You’ll never find 1,400 votes [difference in a recount]. You don’t find 10 votes,” says Winfrey. “But if that’s how they want to spend their money, they have plenty of it, they are entitled.”
If a recount does occur, it will be conducted by the Board of Canvassers with Wayne County.
