A Preview of the 90th Academy Awards
Detroit News film critic Adam Graham and Michigan Public Radio’s Cheyna Roth share predictions and talk about the Oscars as a cultural moment.
The 90th Academy Awards are on Sunday.
Hollywood’s biggest night is beginning to look a bit different after a tremendous amount of criticism in recent years for the Oscars’ lily-white line-up of nominees.
A movement sprang up on social media a few years ago labeling the award show “Oscars So White” and the Academy bungled a few awkward attempts at making the event feel younger and hip.
What will the Oscars be like this year?
Several people of color and women are nominated in categories usually reserved for white men? Is the Academy really ready to acknowledge that great art appeals to many audiences, or will we continue to see the same people win over and over again?
Detroit News film critic Adam Graham and Cheyna Roth, the Michigan Public Radio Network’s resident film buff and longtime couch critic, join Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about their predictions for this year’s Oscars and about the awards ceremony as a cultural moment.
