NABJ In Detroit: Celebrating Black Journalists And Newsroom Diversity

Black journalists come to Detroit for major annual conference.

Laura Weber-Davis, WDET

This week the National Association of Black Journalists hosts its annual conference, and this year it’s in Detroit. Thousands of black journalists will come to the city, many of whom will see it for the first time, and attend conference sessions, workshops, and events. It’s all in the spirit of strengthening and empowering black reporters, writers, editors and producers.

It’s fitting NABJ is in Detroit, not only because of our significant black population, but also because of the legacy of black journalists who have chronicled black life in and around Detroit for decades.

Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson speaks with Marketplace Morning Report executive producer Nicole Childers, WDET news director Jerome Vaughn, and WDET marketing and engagement manager Candice Fortman. The panel discusses the importance of newsroom diversity, and the unique difficulties black professionals face with career development in an overwhelmingly white profession.
