Sam’s Jams: Brainstorm – Journey To The Light
From the 1978 album Journey To The Light
Journey to the Light is the second album by the Detroit R&B group Brainstrom. It was released in 1978 on Tabu Records. Tabu Records was a record label based in Los Angeles, California, founded by Clarence Avant (formerly of Sussex Records, where he signed Bill Withers and Dennis Coffey). The group featured Belita Woods on lead vocals (later joined Parliament-Funkadelic), lengendary bassist Deon Estus (bassist for Wham!), drummer Renell Gonsalves (the son of Duke Ellington saxophonist Paul Gonsalves), and others who went on to play with Cameo, Chaka Khan, and many others.
CultureShift airs weekdays 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on WDET 101.9FM.
Every week on CultureShift on WDET, you can hear the curated song selections from music hosts like Ann Delisi, Rob Reinhart, Jon Moshier and more as part of the ongoing “pick of the week” series.
Sam’s Jams is the weekly song selection of WDET’s creative producer Sam Beaubien, a longtime Detroit musician who also helms the soul-funk band Will Sessions.
From 70 years ago to contemporary releases today, Sam’s Jams is the musical equivalent of digging for hours in dusty record store bins to find forgotten-but-should-be-remembered deep cuts pulled from the genres of funk, jazz and soul genres.
The Sam’s Jams Spotify playlist will update with a new song on Mondays after airing on CultureShift, so bookmark this page to find your new favorite song each week.
