Apropos in the Whitney Garden for the Friday Night Motown Revue

Apropos is the moniker of a recording artist with roots in Detroit, blending soul and R&B and splitting his time between homes here in Detroit and in the U.K. This Friday is his second in a five-part series of Motown Revues that he’ll be performing at the Whitney, with music starting at 7:00 pm.

Apropos will present an assortment of Motown covers. This local artist has been christened by none other than Elton John, who raved about his single “Talk Like That,” and featured it on his Beats 1 radio show via Apple Music.

Those Hounds and The Stick Arounds at Trixie’s

As I wrote in WDET’s “Latest In Local” column, Those Hounds create a strain of rock music that has the unwieldy nature of punk and the vociferous blitz of metal, but control everything with meticulous dynamics and this gracefully arranged yet chaotic balance. The band will be playing Trixie’s in Hamtramck with The Stick Arounds and Good Reverend, an Ohio-based band.

Best Exes with Book Lovers and Career Club at Outer Limits

This is a pretty slick line-up.

The best news, for a local music geek like me, is that Best Exes are back in action. This is an indie-rock quartet that splice in a bit of lo-fi pop, super catchy melodies, but experimenting with tones and timbres in interesting ways. I almost think they’re more like a bridge between quirky folk music and minimalist pop-punk. But no matter what I say, they’ve got guitars, they’ve got two dazzling vocalists harmonizing and they create some super catchy melodies.

A new band, one of my favorite band names I’ve heard in years, Book Lovers, are coming over to the Outer Limits Lounge. Also on the lineup, the ever-unclassifiable and ever-utilitarian quirk-pop of Career Club, blending synthesizers and guitars and drums and office supply media carts.

We’ll return a Best Exes song from a couple years ago, “Walk Me To The Bar…

Rebecca Goldberg performs ‘Gojira’ Live

Producer/DJ Rebecca Goldberg will be arranging a spontaneous mix of samples and wavy electronic sounds surging atop frenetic beats conjured from her array of electronic instruments including Roland Aira, Korg and Yahama machines, all while an original print of the 1954 Japanese ‘kaiju’ film Gojira (Godzilla) is projected before her.

Goldberg is joined by Wing Vilma (a.k.a. producer Miles Coleman) and Tammy Lakkis, a songwriter/producer/DJ and poet who fuses lounge-y vocals with electronic grooves, fusing the worlds of trip-hop, house and techno. This is all going down at Armageddon Beach Party in Woodbridge, just off of Trumbull.
