“Jazz From Detroit” Author Mark Stryker Celebrates Jazz This Weekend at the DSO
The virtual jazz marathon on Saturday at the DSO will feature writer Mark Stryker interviewing local jazz musicians in between performances by Regina Carter, Robert Hurst, Marcus Elliot, Charles McPherson and others.
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is throwing a virtual jazz marathon this weekend.
Starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, audiences from far and wide can tune into Jazz From Detroit, which is designed to celebrate Detroit’s landmark jazz legacy. The event stretches over five hours and includes performances by alto saxophonist Charles McPherson with Randy Porter on piano; bassist Robert Hurst and Black Current Jam; saxophonist Marcus Elliot and Michael Malis on piano; as well as violinist Regina Carter and pianist Xavier Davis.
It’s hosted by Mark Stryker, the award-winning arts reporter and author of the book “Jazz From Detroit.” In between performances, he’ll host salon-style interviews with the musicians featured, talking about their music and their connection to the city.
“If you watch the whole thing, you’ll come away with a really renewed appreciation for just how deep and how profound the legacy of jazz from Detroit really is,” says Stryker. “It’s especially important for us in Detroit to recognize that this legacy is all around us and happening in real-time. It’s not all history.”
The virtual jazz marathon at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra happens on Saturday, February 27 starting at 2 p.m. Tickets are $9. For more information, visit the DSO’s official website.
