Photos: Metro Detroit Muslim community celebrates Eid al-Adha

Eid al-adha, the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is an Islamic holiday that marks the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son. During the holiday, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle, distribute part of the meat to poor people and eat the rest.

Saturday marked Eid al-Adha, the Celebration of Sacrifice. Muslims across Metro Detroit gathered to commemorate Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice of his son Ismail.

Imam Suleiman Hani of the Islamic Center of Detroit says the Islamic holiday, one of the largest gatherings of the year, is a time for Muslims to reflect on their purpose.

“We focus on our sacrifices towards God and the things that we’re doing in our lives, whether it’s sacrificing our desires or our time, our worldly distractions in order to remember our Creator.”

During the holiday, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle, distribute part of the meat to poor people, family or friends, and eat the rest.
