Detroit Evening Report: 87% of Detroit public high schools saw graduation rate improve in 2022

Detroit Public School Community District says 20 of its 23 schools saw more students graduate in 2022 compared to the previous year.

DPSCD’s initial rates were inflated due to the state’s “cleaning” of former DPS students who had dropped out and not enrolled in DPSCD schools. Some of the highest increases in the district include West Side Academy at 25.6%, Mumford at 21.1%, Denby at 16.2% and Central High at 15.2%.
DPSCD superintendent Nikolai Vitti says while improvements can still be made, the current increase shows how dedicated the district’s faculty and staff are to help students graduate.
“Although we still have a lot of work to do in this area, I am proud of the strategic and intentional work of our high school district team, high school principals, and their staff,” Vitti said in a statement. “The course recovery work, especially as a product of the pandemic, has been grueling for staff and students but everyone refused to make excuses and our students benefited by graduating in four years.”
Two Detroit high schools that did not show improvement, Cody and Pershing High, had leadership changes in 2022 but are expected to show improvement this year.
