Detroit voters had the opportunity to head to the polls yesterday for Michigan’s presidential primaries.

As expected, President Joe Biden won the Democratic primary. But he faced opposition from a coalition asking Democrats to vote “uncommitted” as a protest against the Biden administration’s strong support for Israel.

More than 100,000 people across the state voted “uncommitted” in the state’s Democratic primary, including large percentages of voters in Dearborn and Hamtramck — cities with large Muslim and Arab-American populations.

Biden received 86.8% of Democratic votes in the city of Detroit. About 11% of Detroit voters cast their ballots for “undecided.”

On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump beat challenger Nikki Haley by a margin of 68% to 27% in Michigan, with almost 2,500 Detroiters casting their ballots for Trump. That’s twice as many as those in Detroit who voted for Haley.

The candidates will now move on to campaign in advance of next week’s Super Tuesday primaries, where voters in 16 states and the territory of American Samoa will cast their ballots.
