Detroit Evening Report: New ‘Little Village’ cultural district set to open on Detroit’s east side next month

Our partners at Outlier Media report a medley of buildings in the East Village are set to open what the developers describe as a new cultural district in the city.
Owners of the Library Street Collective gallery downtown bought the former Good Shepherd church and several adjacent buildings, and began major renovations in 2019. They are calling it “Little Village” and it’s set to open next month.
The district will have an art gallery, bar, bed-and-breakfast, restaurant, artist studios and more. The owners, who also rehabbed about 10 homes nearby, say a number of artists attracted by the development have moved into the neighborhood.

- Nonprofit Keep Growing Detroit’s first seed and plant pickup is happening next week, on April 22. It’s part of their Garden Resource Program, designed to help Detroiters get their gardens started.
- The Metro Food Rescue is looking for volunteers to help deliver prepared and unserved food from the NFL Draft to those in need. The organization is the official Food Rescue Partner for the Draft.
- The NAACP Michigan State Conference is working to reactivate the NAACP Highland Park Branch. The Organizing Committee needs 100 members to do it, and has been meeting at different locations and virtually throughout Highland Park since November 2023 to reach community members.
