‘Menorah in the D’ Lights up Detroit for Chanukah
The eight-day “festival of lights” kicks off in Campus Martius on Sunday.
Jewish leaders are gathering in Detroit to celebrate the beginning of Chanukah this weekend. The event, called “Menorah in the D”, will mark the start of the eight-day festival of lights. Kasriel Shemtov is the Rabbi of The Shul – Chabad Lubavitch. He says the event is an opportunity to share a Jewish custom.
“We have such a beautiful holiday that each one of us celebrates in our homes, with our families, and we light those candles and we light up our hearts, we light up the lights of our families, but it’s also a time when we can all come together as community and do it together in the center square, bringing the message of Chanukah to the public, to the world.”

Shemtov says the event will have live music, kosher food, and a zip line. The fifth annual “Menorah in the D” celebration takes place Sunday in Campus Martius Park.
