Detroit: Hair Capital of the World
Since the 1980s, Detroit hair designers have stretched the boundaries of what could be done with hair.
Since the 1980s, Detroit stylists have designed larger than life hair creations to be shown off at the city’s annual Hair Wars event. Behind these extravagant formations of shapes and colors is a local industry of highly skilled barbers and stylists. Through hair they have personified Detroit’s culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity.
Audio storyteller Shannon Cason and photographer Justin Milhouse have collaborated to tell this story of Detroit, “Hair Capital of the World.”
Experience narratives from local hair shops in-person at a photography and audio storytelling exhibit located a block away from where many of the stories take place. The opening of “Hair Capital of the World” will take place Thursday, April 14 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Artist Village Detroit. This installation is free and open to the public and will be on display through April 23.
