Detroit Evening Report: Warming centers, respite locations now open throughout the city

The City of Detroit has opened up warming centers around the city to give residents a break from the cold weather.

Cass Community Social Services and Detroit Rescue Ministries offer places to stay overnight, showers and meals for those experiencing homelessness. Several other locations around the city, including public libraries and community centers, offer a place for residents to get out of the cold during their normal business hours.  The warming and respite centers will continue offering cold weather assistance through March 31

Respite Locations – Recreation Centers

The City of Detroit is providing recreation centers as respite locations, which are open during normal operating hours.  

  • Adams Butzel Complex, 10500 Lyndon, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday-Friday
  • Butzel Family Center, 7737 Kercheval Ave.,  11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday 
  • Clemente Recreation Center, 2631 Bagley,  1 to 9 p.m., Monday-Friday
  • Farwell Recreation Center, 2711 E. Outer Dr., 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.,  Monday-Friday
  • Lasky Recreation Center, 13200 Fenelon,  noon to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday
  • Patton Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Kemeny Recreation Center, 2260 S. Fort, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday
  • Crowell Recreation Center, 16630 Lahser,  1 to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday 
  • Heilmann Recreation Center, 19601 Crusade, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday 

Respite Locations – Detroit Public Library Branches

All Detroit Public Library branches are available during their normal operating hours for residents to stay warm. The Main Library is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursday-Saturday; from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. 

  • Bowen Branch, 3648 W. Vernor, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  • Campbell Branch, 8733 W. Vernor, noon to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
  • Chandler Park Branch, 12800 Harper, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday
