Implications of the Attica Prison Uprising: A Conversation with “Blood in the Water” Author Heather Thompson
In anticipation of her appearance at the Wright Museum on Sat. we hear from Attica uprising author Heather Thompson
Heather Thompson is an award winning historian at the University of Michigan who writes extensively on the subject of mass incarceration for the likes of the New York Times, The Atlantic and Time Magazine. She’s the author of “Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and its Lasting Legacy,” a book that’s 13 years in making and out now from the publisher Pantheon.
At once a thorough report and a haunting, beautifully written narrative of the harrowing conditions and events that went down within the walls of Attica before and during the uprising, Thompson says the book also ties pitfalls, shortfalls and societal attitudes as they relate to the modern american prison system directly to the events at Attica.
Heather Thompson speaking about the book this Saturday, September 17th @ 2 PM at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
