Libertarian Candidate Johnson to Hold Rally in Detroit

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson, beset by falling poll numbers, stumps Friday at Detroit’s Cobo Center.

Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson travels to Detroit Friday for an evening rally at Cobo Center.

Johnson has seen his polling numbers steadily decline in recent months since he made high-profile gaffes about foreign policy matters and was unable to qualify for the presidential debates.

The former New Mexico governor has even dropped behind independent candidate Evan McMullin in Utah.

But Johnson is the only third-party candidate on the ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Experts predict he could still influence the election if the overall presidential race is close.

So Johnson is campaigning in states where analysts say he could be a factor. That includes Michigan and, this weekend, Ohio.

Experts say Johnson’s support has remained fairly consistent in Michigan, though analysts add that voters in the state have chosen third-party candidates less frequently than the rest of the country during the past four elections.
