This weekend’s The Progressive Underground is a CAFE MAHOGANY Tribute Edition. Cafe Mahogany was the mid-1990s-era poetry/music venue that launched the careers of many of Detroit’s top poets, wordsmiths and music artists and is often referred to as Detroit’s “Harlem Renaissance.”
Appearing on the show will be Mahogany host Joel “Fluent” Greene, as well as an all-star collection of Mahogany poets (many of whom will be doing live readings) and other artists/wordsmiths influenced by the movement such as Jessica Care Moore, Khary Kimani Turner, Mike Ellison, Stephen “Sparrow” O’Neal, Frenchie Davis, Carl “DJ Invisible” Hollier, Malik Alston, Reshounn Foster, Ber-Henda Williams, Rhonda Welsh, Mahogany owners Carl & Cyrus Shaw, tastemaker Zana Smith and various others.
It will be a night of poetry, music and vibe-making as the WDET studios is converted into a poetry and music cypher. The action happens this Sunday, December 11, 8-11 pm EST on 101.9 WDET
