Pow Wow Set for Saturday
Native American arts and culture to highlight event
A group that refers to itself as the “invisible minority” plans to come together this weekend. Southeast Michigan is home to nearly 50-thousand Native Americans from dozens of different tribes.Chief Executive Officer for the American Indian Health and Family Services of Southeast Michigan, Ashley Tuomi says census data show Wayne County has about 20-thousand Native American residents.
“Oakland has a little over 10-thousand Native Americans. In Macomb, we have almost 8-thousand Native Americans and then the rest of the counties are a lot smaller than that” -Ashley Tuomi
Tuomi says Metro Detroit’s Native American population is often referred to as the “invisible minority” because it is spread out among neighborhoods and cities. An annual Pow Wow and health fair is planned for Saturday (08/19) at Romanowski Park in Detroit. The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm.
