Former Detroit House of Corrections Property Will Soon Have New Owner
Sale of 120-acre Plymouth property expected by mid-December
The site of a former women’s prison in Plymouth Township is expected to be turned over to a new owner soon. The State of Michigan spent over 2 million dollars to demolish the Detroit House of Corrections, which closed in 2004. Director of the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority, Josh Burgett says the 120-acre parcel on Five Mile Road., west of Beck, has been cleared.
“To get that property ready for development we’ve demolished the 22 structures that were on that property and we have it ready for redevelopment”
Officials from Plymouth Township want the land to be used as part of a high tech corridor. Burgett says the RFP process is closed. He says the Michigan Land Bank board will make a decision on the sale of the property at its December 12th meeting.
