In the early ’90s Club Heaven was a sanctuary for Detroit’s LGBTQ community, allowing a primarily gay, black, and young crowd a safe space to freely express themselves.
The club was a destination for locals and celebrities, all drawn to the dance floor by a legendary sound system.
The system, now in disrepair, is a valuable piece of Detroit’s electronic music history.
Listen to CultureShift’s Amanda LeClaire talk with Damon Percy, Chair of the Detroit Sound Conservancy‘s Club Heaven Kickstarter campaign, about how the club changed the lives of those who spent a night on the dance floor.
