Detroit Native dream hampton Named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People
hampton is the executive producer of “Surviving R. Kelly”, which helped to illuminate numerous stories from women who have accused Kelly of abuse.
Over the course of three nights in January, the Lifetime channel aired the chilling docu-series Surviving R. Kelly. The unforgettable series resonated deeply with viewers, igniting a nationwide cultural conversation.
Now, that series’ executive producer, dream hampton, is being recognized for her work with a spot on TIME Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Influential People.
hampton is a Detroit author, artist, activist, and producer. She helped to illuminate numerous stories from women who have accused Kelly of abuse, pedophilia, and predatory behavior. The series also put renewed attention on Kelly himself, who in February posted $100,000 bail after being charged in Chicago with 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse. Kelly pleaded not guilty and has continued to deny any wrongdoing.
Detroit police are also investigating him after a woman came forward last month claiming that he took advantage of her when she was just 13 years old.
hampton joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about the TIME honor, everything that has happened since Surviving R. Kelly aired, and what’s next for her.
