To Impeach or Not to Impeach?

Would impeachment proceedings serve as a check against a combative administration? Would it backfire on Democrats?

Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election didn’t lead to charges against the president for conspiracy or obstruction of justice.

But it certainly seemed to lay out a case for Congress to take action against President Donald Trump.

Should Democrats, who now control the House of Representatives, pursue that course, as a way of punishing an administration they believe has interfered with the proper administration of justice? Or would that be handing Trump what he wants — a continued fight that gets his base energized going into the 2020 campaign?

On Detroit Today, Stephen Henderson speaks with some people who have thought quite a bit about these questions and have long histories in politics.

Ron Fournier is the president of the Truscott Rossman political PR consulting firm based in Michigan. Fournier covered the Clinton White House as a correspondent for the Associated Press and is the former publisher of Crain’s Detroit Business.

Saul Anuzis is a Republican political consultant with Coast to Coast Strategies. He’s also the former Michigan Republican Party Chair.

Tom Steyer is a billionaire activist who has spent millions of dollars in an effort to impeach President Trump. He’s the founder of the organizations NextGen America and Need to Impeach.
