It seems almost everything is divided along party lines these days, and impeachment is no exception.

FiveThirtyEight poll shows that as of October 27, 2019, 83.3 percent of Democrats support impeachment, in contrast to the only 11.4 percent of Republicans.

Nolan Finley of the Detroit News joined Stephen Henderson on Detroit Today for a spirited debate on partisanship in Washington and its impact on the current impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

Finley says he does not support impeachment proceedings, believing it would be unhealthy for a nation already steeped in partisanship. On the consequences of impeachment, Finley says, “Take a divided country and blow it apart even further.”

That isn’t his only concern, Finley also questions the motivations of Democrats, like Adam Schiff, and the integrity of the impeachment process itself. The closed-door impeachment inquiry proceedings have instigated calls from the right for increased transparency, even inspiring a protest on Capitol Hill by Republican lawmakers. Finley seems to be echoing these qualms with the inquiry, stating, “I think the process itself has been corrupt and mishandled.”

What then is the proper response to President Trump’s actions? Finley argues that the voters should play judge and jury. “You fight this at the ballot box” Finley says. He believes American voters should have the final say on President Trump’s fate.
