Mackinac Policy Conference 2021: Duggan Talks Refusal to Debate in November Election, Detroit City Council Troubles
Mayor Mike Duggan says his administration has greatly improved the city over the past eight years despite current corruption investigation.
The Detroit mayoral election is six weeks away, just as the Detroit City Council faces an FBI investigation on suspicion of corruption and bribery. Mayor Mike Duggan says he is not concerned about the corruption probe’s findings, nor is he concerned about debating with his fellow mayoral candidates.

Mike Duggan is mayor of Detroit. He says he refuses to debate Detroit mayoral candidate Anthony Adams because of his campaign rhetoric. “People can criticize me all they like, but I’m trying to change politics in the city.” He also claims that the Adams campaign “has been nothing but spewing hate … I will not give a platform for hate.”
On the recent FBI raid of Detroit City Hall and city council members’ homes, Duggan says he does not seriously suspect corruption. “I don’t think people should read too much into search warrants. We still have too much opportunity among the towing contracts for people to try to operate at the margins.”
Duggan says he believes the city’s ethics policies are too robust for corruption to take place. “After the Kilpatrick administration … there are clear ethics and policies … I don’t know that the issue is a lack of rules.
