Art Deco Movie Theater on Detroit’s East Side to be Restored
Nonprofit Friends of the Alger Theater is running a crowdfunding campaign to fix up Detroit’s Alger Theater.
Detroit’s Alger Theater is starting to show movies for the first time in 30 years. The non-profit Friends of the Alger Theater is raising money to restore the art deco building on Detroit’s East Side.Organization Vice President Mike Gentile says it’s taken a couple of decades to reach this point.
“A group started back in the 80’s—Friends of the Alger Theater—to preserve the building, and did, you know, a decent job of keeping that building there, but not much progress was happening. And in the last five years, our efforts have really kicked into a higher gear to get the doors open, get the boards off the windows and start activating that space.”
Gentile says if a crowd-funding campaign succeeds, there are plans to create a rooftop deck and café on top of the theater. He says the initiative runs through the end of the month.
